Dentist with a Special Interest or Specialist – What’s the Difference?
it’s a question we’re often asked by patients at Stoke Lane Dentistry. What’s the difference between a general dentist, a dentist with a special interest and a specialist dentist?
With so many different qualifications and descriptions used in dentistry, it’s understandable that patients can find it confusing.
You may have come across terms such as special interest in endodontics, practice limited to root canal treatment or Specialist Endodontist. They sound similar, but they don’t necessarily mean the same thing.
So, we thought we’d explain the differences and why they may matter when choosing your dental care.
General Dentist
General dentists are the foundation of dental care. They diagnose and treat a wide range of dental problems, from routine examinations and fillings to crowns, extractions and root canal treatment.
Many also undertake additional training and develop considerable expertise in particular treatments, referring patients to specialists when more complex care is required.
Dentist with a Special Interest (DwSI)
Some dentists choose to focus on a particular area, such as endodontics (root canal treatment), dental implants or restorative dentistry.
They may have completed additional postgraduate training and spend much of their working week providing these treatments.
However, having a special interest or limiting your practice to a particular treatment does not automatically make you a registered specialist.
For example, a dentist may provide advanced root canal treatment without being a GDC-registered Specialist in Endodontics. This is entirely permissible, provided they work within their competence and describe their qualifications and experience accurately.
Specialist Dentist
In the UK, the General Dental Council (GDC) maintains official specialist lists for recognised areas of dentistry.
To be included, dentists must meet the GDC’s specialist registration requirements, typically through several years of advanced postgraduate training and assessment.
Specialists develop extensive knowledge and experience in diagnosing and treating more complex cases within their chosen field.
Importantly, specialist status is independently recognised and can be verified on the GDC register.
Specialist Dentistry at Stoke Lane
At Stoke Lane Dentistry, we bring together specialist expertise across several areas of dentistry, alongside the general dental care we continue to provide for our patients and their families.
Our team includes:
- Dr Armineh Arzandeh – Specialist Endodontist: Advanced root canal treatment, re-treatment and saving natural teeth. Armineh completed three years of full-time specialist training at the Eastman Dental Institute and has been on the GDC Specialist List for Endodontics since 2018.
- Dr Simon Martin – Oral Surgery: Complex extractions, wisdom teeth and advanced surgical dental care.
- Dr Phillip Pearce – Specialist Prosthodontist: Complex restorative dentistry, replacing missing teeth and rebuilding damaged or worn teeth.
- Dr Bindhu Koshy – Specialist Periodontist: Advanced gum disease treatment and helping patients preserve their natural teeth.
How Can You Check If Your Dentist Is a Specialist?
It’s easy to check. Simply visit the GDC’s official register, where you can search for a dentist and see whether they are registered on a specialist list.
Of course, not every dental problem requires a specialist. Many treatments can be successfully managed by experienced general dentists.
What matters is understanding the qualifications of the person treating you and having access to the appropriate expertise when you need it.

At Stoke Lane Dentistry, we believe general dentists and specialists play equally important, complementary roles in maintaining and restoring dental health.
