Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT): A More Comfortable Way to Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy
Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is about more than removing stains. At Stoke Lane Dentistry, we use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) with EMS Airflow® technology to provide a gentle, evidence-based approach to professional dental hygiene.
Unlike a traditional scale and polish, GBT focuses on removing harmful bacterial biofilm — a leading cause of tooth decay, gum disease and peri-implant disease — while aiming to make your hygiene appointment more comfortable.
What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?
GBT is a structured approach to professional dental cleaning, based on current clinical evidence. Rather than only removing visible tartar, it follows a step-by-step protocol designed to identify and remove biofilm before it can affect your teeth and gums.
Biofilm is a layer of bacteria that continually forms on your teeth. Left untreated, it’s associated with:
- Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis)
- Tooth decay
- Bad breath
- Staining
- Inflammation around dental implants (peri-implantitis)
GBT is suitable for most patients and may be particularly helpful if you have gum disease, dental implants, braces, crowns or bridges, or simply want to maintain your oral health.
How Does Guided Biofilm Therapy Work?
- We identify the biofilm — a harmless coloured dye highlights areas of plaque and bacteria, helping us clean precisely and showing you where extra attention may help at home.
- Gentle Airflow cleaning — EMS Airflow® combines warm water, air and a fine powder to remove plaque, biofilm and everyday staining, including around implants, braces, crowns and veneers.
- Removal of tartar — any hardened tartar remaining is removed gently using EMS Piezon® technology. Because Airflow has already removed much of the plaque, less scaling is often needed.
- Personalised advice — your hygienist discusses your oral health, gives tailored home-care advice, and recommends when to return for your next hygiene visit.
Why Choose Guided Biofilm Therapy?
- Most patients find it more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish
- Removes plaque, biofilm and surface staining
- Suitable for implants, braces and sensitive teeth
- Supports gum health and helps reduce the risk of tooth decay
- Supports healthier teeth and gums between appointments
Is GBT Right for You?
GBT may be particularly helpful if you:
- Have bleeding gums or gum disease
- Have dental implants, crowns or bridges
- Wear braces or clear aligners
- Experience sensitive teeth
- Would like a gentler hygiene appointment
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Airflow removes external staining from food, drinks and smoking, so teeth appear cleaner and brighter. It doesn’t change the natural colour of your teeth the way professional whitening does.
Most patients find GBT more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish. Warm water and a fine powder are used to help reduce sensitivity during treatment.
This depends on your oral health. Your dentist or hygienist will recommend the interval that’s right for you, which is typically every three to six months.
Yes. GBT is considered one of the safer, effective ways to clean around implants and help reduce the risk of peri-implant disease.
