Regular dental hygiene appointments are a vital part of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. These include the thorough clearing away of any build-up of plaque or tartar, as well as a clean and polish to remove any superficial staining. Latest research also highlights the importance of on-going vists to the hygienist for the body as a whole, with evidence now linking oral health to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Tooth decay and gum disease are the most common reasons for the loss of teeth in adults. In the majority of cases this can be avoided with good oral care – and regularly visiting the hygienist is an effective way to help you achieve this.
As well as keeping your mouth healthy, dental hygiene appointments are a great way to quickly improve the appearance of teeth. They are also a means of monitoring for potential problems, as your hygienist will be able to detect these in many cases.

We recommend regular visits to the hygienist, with the exact frequency depending on personal preference as well as the condition of your teeth. If you have recently had significant dental treatment (such as having implants fitted) then additional hygiene appointments are recommended. Your dentist will advise you on this.
Establishing a good daily hygiene routine is essential for keeping your teeth and gums in good condition. We strongly advise brushing teeth two times a day, as well as carefully cleaning between them with floss or an interdental brush at least once a day. This will help prevent the formation of plaque and tartar along the gum line, which can eventually lead to tooth decay and gingivitis.
It should take at least two minutes to properly brush all of your teeth. The toothbrush should be gently moved back and forth in short strokes while placed at a 45 degree angle towards the gums. The backs of the teeth should be carefully cleaned as well as the fronts.
