Dental implants are titanium screws that replace the root section of a missing tooth. They sit below the gum line and are fitted directly to the jaw bone, which makes them extremely stable. The implant is designed to hold an abutment which allows it to be capped with a dental crown (the visible part of the new tooth). This combination of implant and crown provides a solution that both looks and feels like a natural tooth.
Implants have the added advantage of not impacting on the neighbouring teeth. This is unlike dental bridges, an alternative solution for replacing missing teeth, which rely on the strength of the adjacent teeth on either side to hold them in place. Dental implants are typically used to replace a single missing tooth, though they can also be used to replace several teeth at once to reconstruct a smile more significantly.
At your initial appointment we will take x-rays and carefully assess your case to determine the best course of action. We will then talk you through the recommended treatment and, if you decide to go ahead, prepare a treatment plan for you.
The process involves several appointments at the practice. The first procedure involves fitting the implant screw to the jaw bone. This will provide the secure foundation for the new tooth. A period of time is then allowed for the implant to completely fuse with the jaw.
When the site has fully healed, the implant can then be fitted with an abutment onto which a dental crown can be placed. The crown will be shaped and coloured to perfectly match your natural teeth. We will then invite you to come back to the practice at agreed intervals in order to monitor progress.
There are several options available to replace missing teeth and the most appropriate treatment depends on factors including the number of teeth missing, general oral health and budget. Dentures (either partial or full) and dental bridges can both be the best solutions for particular cases. However, in general, dental implants are generally the best option, as they look the most natural, offer the greatest stability and don’t impact on other teeth.
