Dental crowns and bridges are artificial devices that are securely fitted on top of either natural teeth or the connecting elements (abutments) fitted to dental implants. They look exactly like natural teeth and offer the same level of functionality. If you have any weakened, damaged or missing teeth then crowns and bridges are great solutions to restore them.

Teeth can become damaged by either decay, accident or natural wear and tear. At Stoke Lane Dentistry our team can strengthen, protect and aesthetically improve them with a dental crown. This is a porcelain ‘cap’ that is fitted on top and looks like the visible part of a real tooth. A crown can also be used in combination with a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.
Bridges are another effective way to replace missing teeth. They typically consists of one or more pontics (false teeth) fitted together with a crown on either end. These end crowns are then fitted on top of the teeth or implants adjacent to the gap. This allows the pontics in between to comfortably sit on the gum line and fill the space vacated by the missing teeth.
Before any treatment your dentist will examine your teeth to assess whether a crown or bridge is suitable. The treatment itself requires two visits to the practice. At the first appointment the preparatory work is carried out and impressions are taken. These are then sent to a laboratory for the new device to be specially crafted. Once ready, this is returned to the practice where it is fitted into position at the second appointment. A final clean and polish completes the procedure.
Crowns and bridges are extremely hard-wearing and can last for many years. They are usually made from porcelain which is very durable. A strong adhesive is used to to keep them securely fitted in place.
Good oral hygiene will help maximise the longevity of crowns and bridges. Teeth and gums should be looked after by brushing two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste, as well as flossing at least once a day. Regular visits to the dentist or hygienist are also advised after treatment for checking and professional cleaning.
